Grandpa lives shut up aboard his ship and refuses to come off it. Don’t imagine that he’s on land because he chooses to be there! He detests all fixed abode dwellers on principle and likes nothing more than to loose off a few cannon balls to express his anger, his joy, to stave off boredom, declare war on the postman, etc. In short, any excuse is a good one to have a bit of fun!
